BANGKOK LATE BREAKS

Bangkok was named as the joint best city in Asia and the third best city in the world to visit by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine.

The best city title was shared with Thailand’s Chiang Mai – showing the number of great attractions that Thailand offers.

Juthamas Siriwan, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said: “This shows how Bangkok and Chiang Mai have changed. The awards reflect their great success.

“Just ten years ago, Bangkok was known more for its traffic and nightlife. And Chiang Mai has also improved phenomenally.”

She went on to explain that the rich history and heritage of Bangkok along with its solid economy and fabulous hotels had led to the award.

Bangkok’s recently opened Suvarnabhumi is also expected to add the quality of service visitors experience in Thailand.

The Thai capital’s mix of modern and traditional means it remains a favourite with tourist from around the world and is often sampled as a city late break before heading out across the rest of the country and destinations such as Phuket or Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai is the centre for tourism in the northern Thailand and is known as the Rose of the North. It is a peaceful small town with a long history and a reputation as the centre for the country’s best handicrafts.

The Travel + Leisure poll also revealed five of the world’s top 50 hotels are in Thailand, including two that made the top ten.
