NANTES BREAKS

On the west portion of France, just a short distance away from the coast of the Atlantic, lies the metropolitan city of Nantes. It is located on the region of Pays de la Loire in the historical place of Britanny. Nantes sits on the Loire riverbanks with the Atlantic Ocean nearby. The city of Nantes has remarkably been one of the key cities during the French Revolution. Reports show that way before slavery was abolished in the face of Nantes; it was the whole country’s capital city for slave trade.

Nantes can easily be reached through the Nantes International Atlantique Airport on the southern part of the city. Regular flights from Parisian cities like French and Lyon are always available.

The city can also be reached through train via a couple of hours’ ride on the TGV lines from the city of Paris. Actually there a number of other railway lines, but TGV is the most known. The city of Nantes has train railways that connects to the neighboring French cities of Lille, Marseille, Lyon, and the love city of Paris. There are also plans of connecting Nantes to the eastern communities of France and so with Strasbourg. Via the classical train, which is otherwise termed as Corail, the city of Nantes is connected to places like Toulouse, Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Lyon, and Quimper. There are also regional trains, or what is more commonly known as TER, that brings people from La Roche sur Yon, Saint Nazaire, Le Mans, Angers, and other faraway cities to Nantes.

By land, there are a handful of Web sites that are offering car rental services. Most notably, there is an online car hire center that serves as a directory and offers information about the car rental services in and around Nantes. There are also specific sites that provide price quotations with regards to car rentals.

Also, who haven’t heard of the Nantes omnibus? Originated in the 1800s, the omnibus tramway can be said to be the very first transit system in the city that has been available in the country. In 1826, however, the omnibus tramway system aborted its operations. Sometime in 1985, the Tramway de Nantes was reopened with three tramway lines to boot. At present, the Tramway de Nantes has become the largest public tramway network in the whole of France. At present too, the opening of five additional tramway lines are contemplated. In the United Kingdom, the Nantes tramway can be likened to the Nottingham Express Transit.

There is no problem in getting around since public transport is relatively easy to access. There are available bus and tram tickets on automated ticket machines in major points in Nantes City. Travelers can take their pick from three tram lines and several other bus lines. Bus and tram tickets can be one day, one way, or weekly.

There is no problem of where to stay too as there are hotels and tourists inns around. Top examples are the Mercure Hotel, which is a three-star hotel located nearby the train station in Nantes. This hotel is also the favorite in meetings and conventions. Close to the cathedral and the pristine castle is the Novotel hotel, which is another top tourist abode. The hotel is also just a walking distance from the city’s train station and Nantes Convention Center.

The main tourist attractions in the city include the St. Peter and St. Paul Cathedral for religious devotees. For mall rats, the Passage Pommeraye is the perfect destination. It is a mini-commercial center located in the city’s central area. It was named after Louis Pommeraye, the man who made the passage. The said shopping mall displays a strong influence of French architecture. Most recently, on the birth of the new millennium, the Palais de Justice was built and designed by Jean Nouvel.

The pioneer of sci-fi writing or scientific fiction writing Jules Verne holds a museum too. Visitors from all over the world ponder on his genius while touring the museum and his ancestral home. In addition, Nantes also has Musee des Beaux, which is a museum for the arts.

There is also a well-sculpted tower structure that served as the previous entrance of a biscuit factory called Lefevre-Utile. The breathtaking tower is by the way called Lu tower or La Tour LU.
