MALMO LATE BREAKS
Malmö is not only one of the top travel destinations in the world, it is also the commercial center of Sweden. An international city, Malmö has a greatly diversified 270,000 population belonging to 164 different nationalities and speaking more than a hundred languages. Perhaps it is due to this fact that Malmö is dramatically changing into a city of knowledge from being an industrial city. Major investments on technology advancement and training programs are slowly replacing older industries. Leading Sweden’s ventures in the field of higher education is Malmö University, which recently accommodates 15,000-plus students.
All year round, Malmö provides a wide variety of activities for its proud locals and for travelers who aim to have the great Malmö experience. Go canoeing. Experience their unique sauna treat and take a dip in their refreshing sea afterward. Shop till you drop. Be fascinated by the city’s museums. Take a stroll or have a picnic at the beautiful parks. Read on and be amazed at the many things and places to see and do in Malmö.
It follows that as an international city Malmö is within everybody’s easy reach. Traveling to Denmark, Sweden, and the Continent is even made fast and easy because of Öresund’s excellent infrastructure. Whether you opt to go by plane, ferry, train, or car, Malmö is definitely easy to reach.
Two international airports have been serving Malmö. One is Copenhagen/Kastrup Airport located in Denmark, and the other is at Malmö’s southeast, approximately 30 km, Malmö-Sturup Airport. With Malmö Aviation, the latter offers many flights daily to Stockholm Arlanda and Bromma Airport. Regular flights to Sturup are also provided by Ryan Air.
The Swedish Railway Company, or commonly known as SJ, owns and operates majority of the train services in Sweden. Malmö maintains its regular train connections with Oslo, Berlin, and Copenhagen. Travel from Malmö to Stockholm only takes four hours on their newest high-tech train.
Other railway companies, such as Scandlines and TT-line, may also take you to your desired destinations in Malmö. And because of the construction and the recent opening of the Öresund Bridge there now exists a direct link from Malmö to Copenhagen.
Right now the city is focused on establishing an attractive and comfortable business environment while maintaining a healthy and active business community.
A first-time visitor should not miss what return visitors always want to take a peek of: one of Santiago Calatrava’s masterpieces, the Turning Torso. Turning Torso is Sweden’s tallest building and consists of 54 stories having a ninety-degree twist from top to base. Turning Torso meetings are never ordinary with their exclusive meeting rooms.
Other popular meeting places and interesting sixteenth-century buildings swarm around Lilla Torg. Hedmanska Gården, an enclosed courtyard, displays a sixteenth-century half-timbered house and a late nineteenth-century warehouse that now serves as a home to Form/Design Centre, which holds regular exhibits in design and architecture. In July, concerts are held in the large Hedmanska Gården; and from March to October, more outdoor restaurants and cafés are added to Lilla Torg. For an exhilarating experience of great cuisines from around the world, visit Saluhallen, a covered market that features several restaurants and cafés that will surely give you wonderful tastes of wonderful food.
Lovers and dating couples would love the idea of taking a stroll at the serene and beautiful Gamla Väster area where the streets are normally quiet and peaceful. Also found in the area are some designer boutiques, art galleries, more restaurants, and even private homes. Another popular park and equally known entertainment venue for tourists and locals alike areMöllevången, Pildammsparken, Kungsparken, Slottsparken, and Folkets Park. Folkets Park offers year-round activities for the family, a children’s playground and theater, pony rides, and a colorful flea market.
The remains of the oldest Renaissance castle are now being managed by Malmö Museums. Malmö later then made modern additions to the castle and in 1937 opened some of the new premises to the public.
For the water-loving traveler, Malmö has the relaxing sandy beach of Ribersborg, whom locals refer to as Ribban. Ribban is only a walking distance from the center of the city. Children enjoy the water because it stays shallow even far away from its shore. As such more spaces are available for water games and other sporting activities. It is important to note that the sand in this beach was taken from Öresund and needed to be transported by rail to Ribersborg from the Port of Malmö. Another famous destination for swimmers is the grand Kallbadhuset from 1898, which offers wood-fired sauna all year round.
And except for the Öresund Bridge, majority of the sites just mentioned are within walking distance from the city’s center.
Need we say more? Book your tickets now and have that wonderful Malmö experience—it’s now or never.
