NAPLES BREAKS
Sat beneath Mount Vesuvius you’ll find the ancient and highly controversial city of Naples. So often fraught with scandals and mafia involvement in the past, it seems that Naples is finally coming to terms with the dark side and addressing its prominent cultural influence instead.
Of course, Mount Vesuvius will forever be associated with the catastrophic blast which buried Pompeii in ancient time, and while remnants of the forgotten town can be accessed through Naples, there’s plenty to commemorate the history of this legendary region.
The streets of Naples are famously squashed with narrow walking trails and tiny shops. It makes for quite a surreal experience walking through the city and you can get a real sense for what it might have been like living there in the Roman days when the empire was at its most powerful.
Tourists are spoilt for choice with the attractions on offer. Maschio Angioiano is an incredible sight to see, and one of the most handsomely crafted palaces on the continent. Constructed by Charles of Anjou and housing a magnificent marble arch, the architectural achievement is second to none.
You’ll also find the Palazzo Reale a great destination to get a sense of the artistic history in and around the city. With regular exhibitions and a multitude of paintings on display, there’s plenty to admire and tourist activity is rife around the area.
For those looking to visit an even more historical landmark, Castel dell’Ovo is a spectacular sight on the waterfront. An ancient Normandy castle which looks out to sea, the view can be truly captivating from the top at sunset. There are also plenty of shops and restaurants scattered around the sight making for a worthwhile afternoon trip to satisfy the entire family.
Naples doesn’t disappoint when it comes to accommodating its tourists either. If you have the money to burn, the sea front is brimming with incredibly desirable five star hotels. Most of these offer the type of view out on to the ocean that can only be dreamt off.
It’s hard to avoid the colossal port which has held such a pivotal place in the city’s history. Naples has a reputation for being slightly manic around town. The streets are often bustling with activity and it can be quite a rush to get from A to B. The relaxing sea air makes for a healthy break and is perfect for an evening meal out after a busy day of sightseeing – especially at the height of summer.
The city has been deemed the Bombay of Europe due to the frenetic lifestyle that some of the natives lead. Not everything about Naples is perfect. There’s a relatively high rate of poverty and unemployment levels are rife. Tourists may be a little taken back to make a wrong turning and find themselves starring at some of the most abandoned shacks in Italy, but that’s part of the beauty behind the cultured history of the city. There’s such a diverse landscape in Naples that it would be impossible to compare it to any other Italian city.
For those looking to visit a region which modestly portrays its history and offers a fine sprinkling of famous landmarks, Naples is certainly a great place to start.
