MONACO BREAKS

Monaco… The world’s second smallest independent country and by far the most densely populated. With just over 30,000 citizens crammed in to a microstate of just two square kilometres, it’s a wonder that Monaco can even make room for the upper class tourists which provides much of its income.

Situated along the border of France, most of the population is made up of rich businessmen who’ve moved to enjoy the high life in Monaco’s famous spotlight. The country is notorious as one of the most expensive places in the world to visit, and certainly one of the most intriguing. It has a reputation as a bit of a flamboyant destination, no doubt enhanced by the several Formula 1 races which bring the entire country to a standstill. If you visit at such a time, you can be sure to catch the finest racing vehicles in the world dashing across the street at a frantic speed.

Monaco is a French speaking nation with a scattering of Italian and English representatives.

Many people choose to visit as a stop gap between France and the Mediterranean on European trips. It’s wise not to stay in Monaco too long with the weight of an extremely trendy lifestyle making it all too easy to rack up a huge bill for the stay. The famous casinos lining the beach front can quite easily clear out a bank account and it wouldn’t be overstepping the mark in comparing Monaco to a mini European Las Vegas.

If casinos are your thing, don’t miss out on the typically fashionable Casino of Monte Carlo. The extravagantly decorated resort is a major hotspot for money wielding businessmen, and it’s easy to see why. It sums up just about everything that Monaco stands for; glitz, glamour and the rife exchanging of money.

For a more sedate experience, you can count on the impressive Cathedrale de Monaco to take your breath away. Widely appreciated by Monaco natives as the burial ground for Princess Grace, visitors flock to the sight in overwhelming numbers. It’s also home to a wooden altar from the Spanish Renaissance, not to mention a whole host of historical artistic works.

The country is located some 200 feet above sea level making for some truly spectacular views where the vibrant town stretch meets the clear water. Larvotto Beach runs across the east coastline of the country and tourists will be enthralled by the sight of the overwhelming cliffs that grace the nation.

Tourists should also be sure to check out the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium. With a collection of mesmerising creatures and great marine life exhibitions, the museum provides a thoroughly interesting family experience which many visitors state as one of their favourite attractions upon departing.

During peak summer season, Monaco traditionally remains a pleasant climate to live in. Temperatures rarely rise to unbearable levels and with the beach on hand; those that can afford the permanent lifestyle would be hard pressed to find a more cosmopolitan nation to whittle their time away in. The glitzy strips of clubs and bars are ingrained in to the culture of Monaco and it will remain a strictly upper class destination for most, but that’s not to say that country isn’t remarkably picturesque. For all of its two square kilometres, Monaco can lay claim to some of the most breathtaking views in the whole of Europe. And that’s quite a statement for the famous little microstate.

It certainly isn’t the cheapest place to visit, and quite the opposite of its neighbour, France. Celebrities can be found wandering the streets of Monaco fairly openly and the paparazzi would be wise to move there permanently. One thing’s for sure though, if you’re looking for a quiet break and some peace, you could do a lot better than Monaco. The world’s densest population makes for a ferociously hectic lifestyle, so be prepared to be kept busy if you stop by!
