MILAN BREAKS

The northern Italian city of Milan is one of the most important destinations in the European landscape of culture.

With a vast population of over 1,400,000 in the actual city, it has a memorable history and a rich vein of tradition as you’d probably expect from one of Italy’s major locations.

Conquered by the Romans in around 200 BC, the city has been a key hold location ever since. It has undergone several battles for power, but to this day, Milan is most commonly associated as the fashion capital of Italy – and indeed Europe – as well as being renowned for its increasing economic influence over the country.

Milan’s geographical position, and excellent transportation infrastructure, has seen it emerge as a focal centre point for the way in which Italy operates. There are many industrial sectors separating it from the likes of Rome or Florence. It has a tremendously proud history with the arts and opera, and cultural influence oozes from the many wonderful architectural feats that grace the old city.

Italian cities are hardly deprived of the arts, and Milan provides it by the numbers. Blessed with some truly magnificent buildings, roaming the streets of central Milan can prove quite an experience.

The city is also a major attraction for the glittering world of celebrities. One of the most important modelling destinations in the world and riddled with paparazzi interest, there’s no escaping the glamour and intrigue of Milanese life.

Tourists can look forward to a fascinating journey through Italian past and present if they choose to explore the many exhibitions and galleries dotted around the city.

The Biblioteca Ambrosiana stands proudly with some of the finest work belonging to Leonardo da Vinci. Tourists will often flock to the destination and marvel at the many manuscripts and creative pieces that can be found open for appreciation. If artistic delight is what you’re looking for, you can’t go wrong at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts – another exemplary host to some of the finest cultural achievements in Italian history.

For travellers of a sporting interest, there’s the wonderful Giuseppe Meazza to take the breath away. Home to both football teams of AC Milan and Inter Milan, the San Siro stadium is one of the most familiar football arenas in the world and can hold an impressive 85,000. If you visit at the right time, you can even get tickets for the famous Milan derby. Guaranteed to provide a passionate Italian atmosphere, the derby hosts matches between the native Milanese teams and is one of the most prestigious sporting contests in Europe.

Milan isn’t restricted to the arts and sport though. It has also grown to become arguably the trendiest fashion haunt in Europe. As some of the continent’s most beautifully dressed people, the Milanese love to express themselves through their clothes.

A walk through the centre of the city and its plain as day that fashion is highly regarded by the locals. Don’t expect to get bargain prices in the many trendy outlets around the city though. Milan has a reputation for having the finest clothes in all of Italy, and it doesn’t come cheap.

Visitors can enjoy a near-Mediterranean climate through the summer months, and Italy’s many historical attractions make for a great week away.
