MAHON MINORCA BREAKS
Capital city of Minorca and based in the Balearic Islands, Mahon is a traditional tourist destination for thousands every single year.
As home to one of the world’s largest harbours, the city has notoriously been targeted by foreign invasions in the past. With such a vast port available for the settlers, there was great reason to make Mahon one of the most sought after targets in the Mediterranean. This is evident in the rich vein of culture that flows through the town, featuring both English and Spanish overtones.
Minorca is one of the quieter islands of the Balearic group, and certainly a world away from the manic party atmosphere of Ibiza. Some of the finest tranquil beaches in the Mediterranean can be found around Mahon and the capital city also hosts a variety of attractions.
The tourist industry has been so crucial over the years that it enabled resources to be found for the complete reconstruction of the city. A gentle wander through the streets and you can still find evidence of the storied history, but the city is refreshingly modern and caters towards tourists.
Much of the main activity is centred on the stunning port of the island. The coastline is filled with interesting bars and restaurants and many will simply choose to relax in the sun watching the grand ships go by. The natives are traditionally very welcoming towards their guests and it’s possibly to integrate seamlessly with the vibrant culture.
The Arch de San Roque is certainly worth visiting for a taste of the history behind Mahon. It lures its visitors in as the very last remnants of the great wall which used to circle the city, a further testament to its key strategic past in military activity. Just down the road from San Roque, the town hall can be found with a gallery featuring some of the finest art in the land.
Also to be admired is the beautiful old town of Ciutadella. Blessed with traditional winding streets and plenty of historical landmarks, the town also houses The Castell de Sant Nicolau. It was originally designed to look over the expansive harbour and thus a journey to the grand castle – which still makes use of a retro drawbridge – can provide some magnificent panoramic views of the rest of the island and way out to sea.
For those looking to make their way to the heart of the buzz in the city, the Place Esplanada should be high on the agenda. Acting as the central meeting point for tourists, the square is littered with some of the city’s finest restaurants and cafes. Food is very much treasured in the capital city and there are plenty of appetising menus to be found.
Travelling around the city is an activity best restricted to those who like to walk and appreciate the landmarks up close. There isn’t a particularly excellent transport infrastructure and much of the more distant commuting is done by taxis which can be found trawling for tourists. There are several excellent hotels with renowned accommodation and Minorca certainly makes for a peaceful break.
It might not have the nightlife or the overwhelming activity of Ibiza, but there are some fascinating landmarks to be treasured with a real sense of culture and architectural delight. Mahon continues to prove a popular destination for all ages.
