BIARRITZ BREAKS

Biarritz is a large town in the South West France that has several quarters.  It is the most famous part of the Pays Basque, one of Côte Basque’s principal resorts.

Let me take you down this laid back town’s rich history.

In the mid 19th century, Biarritz soared to fame as the wife of Napoleon III, the Empress Eugenie, built a palace right on the beach. The palace is presently known aptly as Hotel du Palais.  It has joined the ranks of world class hotels.  Foreign royalties, dignitaries and other noblesse were invited by Empress Eugenie to Biarritz.  These foreign visitors were encouraged to stay in the palace with their entourages and courtiers.

A sweet blend of 19th century city residence style is evident in the kind of architecture found in Biarritz.  It is characterized by large, expansive, and stone bricks. Truly this place is an architect’s study room.

Biarritz has a lot to offer than the magnificent buildings alone. It has alluring beaches, golf courses, and quiet a number of sports facilities with a special mention of surfing, for the mere reason that surfing sports started here in Biarritz, France. Surfers from around the world come here to hit the huge waves. An annual festival called the Biarritz Surf Festival commemorates the so-called birth of surfing in Biarritz.  This celebration brings together the Australian, Californian, and Hawaiian surfers.

A walk in the Biarritz beach is both refreshing and relaxing. The beach in Biarritz gives a feeling of calm and tranquility.  With the water lapping at your feet and the Atlantic winds blowing gently at you, you will definitely have that rejuvenating experience.  As the waves crash against the shore, you would have no choice but to take a dip and swim to your heart’s content.  The magnificent proud waves in the area cements every one reason why Biarritz is a preferred surfing destination.

Biarritz was originally a whaling village. It was said by doctors that the seas of Biarritz had phenomenal and thought-provoking medicinal and healing powers.  They recommend bathing in its waters to their patients.  They claim that the water in Biarritz stimulates senses of the patients and in many cases, cure their illnesses.

One of the more popular museums in Biarritz is the Asiatica Museum. It houses the Asian art collection that is very significant in history.  In the collection are various artifacts Asian regions like China, India, Nepal, and Tibet.  There is also another museum that is worth a visit.  It is the Museum of the Sea.  The museum plays home to 24 aquariums with sharks and seals in it.  It is most fascinating.

What do you think of a museum that is all about chocolates?  Mouth-watering?  I bet!  Biarritz has a chocolate museum that is aptly called, err, Chocolate Museum!  It explains and documents—what else—the history and the origins of the chocolate-manufacturing industry.

The Russian Orthodox Church is a must see for those who know their architecture well.  This church is famous for its blue dome.  This was constructed for the Russian aristocrats in 19th century. The Chapelle Imperiale is another great stop.  It proudly flaunts its sophisticated roof interior decoration and exquisite wall tiling.  This magnificent edifice was built for Empress Eugenie. St. Martin’s Church is also a wonderful destination.  It was constructed in the 12th century.  It was later restored in the 16th century.  Interesting architecture and breathtaking murals—what more can an art and architecture lover ask for?

Biarritz is full of interesting places to visit aside from those that have been mentioned. The best way to discover and experience them all is to visit the place.  If you dig the arts and you like the opulent feel of an architectural heritage par excellence, you will definitely have an awesome experience and memorable memories in Biarritz.

So what are you waiting for?  Experience the vacation of a lifetime.  Visit Biarritz before the rest of the world beats you to it!
